The strength of the Volcano

Imported from America in the 14th Century, the tomato found its ideal plantation area in the fertile soils of Vesuvius, developing a particular native variety which over the years became more and more important in the local traditional cuisine.

In 2009 the Piennolo Cherry Tomato obtained the Protected Designation of Origin and today it’s one of the most renowned and food excellences from Campania, appreciated all over the world.

Care and tradition

The traditional cultivation uses wooden pickets and wire at the base of each plant: in this way the tomatoes don’t touch the ground and can evenly receive the sunlight.

The harvest is carried out on July and August and is made entirely by hand cutting off the bunches from the plant, so the nutritional properties are best preserved.

What does "Piennolo" mean?

In local dialect "piennolo" means "pendulum" and indicates the way these tomatoes are preserved.

The best bunches of tomatoes are collected by hand in a loop of twine and then hung on hooks. Finally, they are stored in dry and well-ventilated places to preserve all the organoleptic properties: so the flavour doesn’t change even after many months after the harvest.

A taste hard to forget

The Piennolo Cherry Tomato wins you over with its delicious and intense flavour, with a slightly  acidic aftertaste. Moreover, it is rich in vitamins and minerals like Calcium, Potassium and Phosphorus: a high-quality product, good and very genuine to enjoy at your favourite Obicà restaurant.
